Periodontology

Periodontology is the Dentistry specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect the supporting tissues of the teeth: Gingiva, Alveolar Bone and Periodontal Ligament (fibers that join the tooth to the bone).

Gingivitis or inflammation of the gums is the initial form of periodontal disease and is very common. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a much more serious condition called periodontitis (inflammation/infection of the bone).

This infection, caused by bacteria, can lead to the destruction of the bone and the ligament that holds the tooth to the alveolar bone.

Tooth mobility is one of the most frequent symptoms that can lead to tooth loss.

Currently, these two diseases are the main cause of tooth loss in adults. The main cause of these diseases is plaque and tartar (aka “stone”) and some of the symptoms are:

> Bleeding spontaneously or when brushing the gums

> Red gums

> Increased volume in the gums

> Presence of suppuration in the gums

> Disinserted gingiva (“detached”)

> Loss of texture in the Gingiva

> Gingival Retraction (Exposition of the roots)

> Cold sensitive

> Bad breath and/or bad taste in the mouth

> Teeth shaking and separating.

> Gap opening between the teeth

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)

Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is a Swiss technology used in our oral hygiene consultation.

Using the latest generation AIRFLOW®, PERIOFLOW® and PIEZON®, this technology ensures maximum comfort and effectiveness in reducing the biofilm, thus ensuring better periodontal health for our patients and maximum comfort during the procedure.

At North Clinic, the oral hygiene appointment lasts approximately one hour and is performed by a specialized oral hygienist.

Clinical Periodontal Treatment

The primary objective of periodontal treatment is to stop the progression of periodontal disease, which often takes a silent course.

Periodontal Plastic Surgery

Periodontal plastic surgery aims to correct gingival defects and soft tissue of the periodontium in areas of aesthetic and functional impairment.

Patients who have exposure of the roots that can bring aesthetic and functional compromise, are candidates for surgical increase in gingival thickness and recovery of these gingival recessions, thus providing greater protection to their teeth.
